Political participation means exercising the right to vote, stand for office, join public life, and influence decisions on an equal basis with others. Under Articles 21 and 29 CRPD, it requires accessible information, communication, voting, and support so persons with disabilities can take part freely and effectively. The Zero Project is seeking nominations that provide these measures; nominations may include self-advocacy programmes.

Nominations on the topic of Political Participation may relate to:

  • Access to justice

Access to justice means equal access to courts, police, legal aid, and remedies for persons with disabilities, with needed accommodations and accessible communication. Under the CRPD, it requires removing barriers so people can participate effectively in legal proceedings and have their rights protected. The Zero Project is seeking projects, processes, and procedures that enable these accommodations.

  • Participation in public life

Participation in public life means engaging in community and civic affairs on an equal basis with others. Under the CRPD, it requires accessible information, support, and removal of barriers. The Zero Project is seeking nominations that demonstrate legal, policy, and practical approaches that enable persons with disabilities to access, use, and shape public and civic spaces across all levels of governance. Examples include serving on local community boards, participating in sports clubs, or working in public administration.

  • Political leadership/self-representation

Political representation means persons with disabilities being elected, appointed, or heard in decision-making bodies on an equal basis with others. Under the CRPD, it requires accessible elections, support to stand and serve, and removal of barriers that exclude their voices. The Zero Project is seeking nominations that demonstrate concrete and sustainable pathways into leadership—such as elected or appointed positions, leadership development, or systemic and legislative reforms.

  • Voter and civic education

Voter and civic education means accessible information and training that help persons with disabilities understand elections, rights, and public issues, and participate as voters, advocates, or leaders. Under the CRPD, it must be inclusive, usable, and barrier-free so people can make informed choices. The Zero Project is seeking nominations that demonstrate inclusive voter education approaches that empower persons with disabilities to understand their rights, engage in public discourse, and make informed decisions.

  • Voting policies and procedures

The CRPD underlines that voting procedures, facilities and materials should be appropriate, accessible, and easy to understand and use for all, especially, persons with disabilities. The Zero Project is seeking nominations that demonstrate practical, legal, and technological solutions to make voting fully accessible, including inclusive polling environments, digital accessibility, and capacity-building within election bodies.
