#ZeroCall26

Information- and Communication Technology (ICT) is one of three #ZeroCall26 topics, alongside Accessibility and Crisis Response.

ICT refers to all the technologies used to create, store, share, and manage information and communication. It includes devices like computers, smartphones, and telephones, services.

The UN CRPD requires that all means and devices of ICT are accessible to persons with disabilities underlined by Article 20 among others. The Zero Project seeks ICT solutions that remove barriers such as translation tools, AI-powered systems, orientation systems, steering technologies, robotics, and 3-D printing, to name a few.

Nominations on the topic of ICT may relate to:

  • Gaming Solutions

Accessibility in video games seeks to make software and computers usable for all – persons with and without disabilities. The Zero Project is seeking solutions from inclusive video games, as well as tabletop role-playing games, board games, and similar products.

  • Translation/Communication Tools

Persons with speech problems or intellectual disabilities often face communication problems. The Zero Project is seeking ICT solutions that remove these barriers to communication by using artificial intelligence among other technologies.

  • Orientation Systems

Orientation systems help persons with various disabilities e.g. who are blind or visually impaired, to move independently. The Zero Project is seeking solutions to help people move without barriers. These solutions can be app-based, open-source, in buildings  in the open space, use signal devices, or use AI.

  • Community and Knowledge Platform/Digital Libraries

Community and Knowledge Platforms are online spaces of knowledge. They help people and groups share information, resources, and best practices. The Zero Project is seeking solutions that include accessible online communities, resource-sharing networks, digital libraries, and platforms for the exchange of expertise in the field(s) of accessibility, ICT, and/or crisis response.

  • Computer Steering Technologies

Computer steering technologies help people control computers in new ways. These include brain-computer interfaces and voice commands. They assist people with severe physical disabilities use technology. The Zero Project is seeking solutions that are affordable, easy to use, and accessible, and allow users to communicate and control their environment.

  • Artificial Intelligence / Machine learning / Big Data Solutions

Artificial Intelligence uses machine learning, large amounts of data, and advanced algorithms to simulate human intelligence and automate processes. These technologies can help make things easier for persons with disabilities. The Zero Project is seeking solutions that utilize AI, in order to enable things like real-time sign language translation or solutions to overcome communication barriers.

  • Internet of Things

The Internet of Things means devices that connect and share data. It helps with automation and access. The Zero Project is seeking solutions such as smart home tools, which can monitor health vitals, or automate processes, or enable acess to public and private spaces.

  • 3D Printing

3D printing makes three-dimensional objects from digital models. It offers custom and cheap solutions for persons with disabilities. The Zero Project is seeking solutions that are ideally open-source, allowing for the cheap production and scaling of assistive devices, custom prosthetics, and educational tools.

  • Robotics and Automated Machinery

Robotics and Automated Machinery use machines and robots to do tasks. They need little human intervention and benefit persons with disabilities. The Zero Project is seeking solutions such robotic helpers for daily tasks, remote robotic projects and employers, as well as automated mobility aids and smart machines. The solutions nominated in this category should especially be easy to use, affordable, and scalable.
