#ZeroCall27 AI Infobot

Assistive Technology (AT) innovations are new technologies or design solutions that support persons with disabilities in doing tasks more independently, safely, and effectively. They include tools like screen readers, captioning, smart mobility aids, exoskeletons, and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based support systems. The Zero Project is seeking AT innovations that support these efforts.

Nominations on the topic of Assistive Technology may relate to:

  • Assistive input technologies

Assistive input technologies or alternative input devices allow people to control computers in new ways. These include brain-computer interfaces, voice commands, eye-tracking, switches, gestures, head-tracking, and hands-free computing. The Zero Project is seeking solutions across the full range.

  • Artificial Intelligence / machine learning / Big Data solutions

AI and machine learning solutions for persons with disabilities are digital systems that learn from data to make communication, mobility, learning, and daily tasks easier, safer, and more personalized. They are often used as assistive technologies that adapt to a person’s needs over time. The Zero Project is seeking solutions that utilize AI to overcome communication barriers.

  • Community and knowledge platform/digital libraries

Community and knowledge platforms for persons with disabilities are online spaces where persons with disabilities, caregivers, advocates, and professionals can connect, share experiences, exchange practical advice, and access validated information and resources. They often combine peer support with information sharing, advocacy, and community building, so users can both learn from others and contribute their own knowledge. The Zero Project is seeking solutions that include accessible online communities, resource-sharing networks, digital libraries, and platforms for the exchange of expertise in certain fields.

  • Gaming solutions

Gaming solutions for persons with disabilities are games, devices, and accessibility features that let them play, connect, and enjoy games on more equal terms. Gaming can reduce isolation, support confidence and well-being, and provide social interaction. The Zero Project is seeking solutions from software to adapted hardware switches, or accessible steering devices.

  • Internet of Things

The Internet of Things for persons with disabilities is the use of connected devices and sensors that make everyday environments more accessible, safer, and easier to control. In practice, it links home, mobility, and wearable devices so users can manage tasks, get reminders, and interact with their surroundings more independently. The Zero Project is seeking solutions such as smart home tools, which can monitor health vitals, or automate processes, or enable access to public and private spaces.

  • Orientation systems

Orientation systems for persons with disabilities are tools, methods, or technologies that help a person understand where they are, where they need to go, and how to move safely and independently in an environment. They are especially important for people who are blind, have low vision, or have multiple disabilities affecting navigation. The Zero Project is seeking solutions that can be app-based, open-source, in buildings or in the open space.

  • Robotics and automated machinery

Robotics and automated machinery for persons with disabilities are machines that assist people in doing tasks, move around, or interact with their environment more independently and safely. They can support mobility, daily living, rehabilitation, and communication, especially for persons with severe motor impairments. The Zero Project is seeking solutions such as robotic helpers for daily tasks, remote robotic projects, as well as automated mobility aids and smart machines. The solutions nominated in this category should especially be easy to use, affordable, and scalable.

  • Translation/communication tools

Translation and communication tools for persons with disabilities are technologies or services that help people understand information, express themselves, or communicate across speech, hearing, vision, or language barriers. They can be low-tech, like picture boards, or high-tech, like apps and live captioning systems. The Zero Project is seeking AT innovations that remove these barriers to communication.

  • 3D printing

3D printing is relevant for persons with disabilities because it makes assistive devices easier to customize, faster to produce, and often cheaper than traditional manufacturing. It is especially useful when a person needs a device shaped to a specific body part, task, or environment. The Zero Project is seeking solutions that are ideally open-source, allowing for the cheap production and scaling of assistive devices, custom prosthetics, and educational tools.
