A Global Exchange of Ideas
The Zero Project Asia Pacific Symposium 2024 was co-hosted by SG Enable and the Zero Project, serving as a platform for global leaders, social entrepreneurs, government representatives, and businesses to share good practices, explore partnerships, and discover the latest innovations in accessible technology.
Among the 370 particiants were 20+ Zero Project Internatonal Delegates from over 10 countries, including Zero Project Awardees and experts from diverse sectors, to engage in discussions around advancing disability inclusion across the region.
Senior Parliamentary Secretary Eric Chua, Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth & Ministry of Social and Family Development, graced the event as the guest of honor, reaffirming Singapore’s commitment to creating a more inclusive society for all:
“This event reflects Singapore’s commitment to a more inclusive society and opens doors for the Asia Pacific community to learn from one another’s successes and challenges. Through such collaborative efforts, accessible infrastructure, inclusive employment, and supportive communities can be further developed. We want to empower persons with disabilities to thrive in every aspect of life.”
Addressing Key Challenges in Disability Inclusion
The symposium opened with the Inclusive Business Forum, a biennial event organized by SG Enable. The forum’s discussions focused on the role of businesses in creating inclusive employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, a topic of particular relevance given the region’s diverse challenges.
Topics explored included employment pathways, inclusive business practices, and how spaces can be designed to be more accessible to persons with disabilities. Panel discussions also delved into intersections of inclusive arts and employment, as well as the role of ICT in empowering individuals with disabilities.
One of the key moments of the forum was the release of the Zero Project’s latest report, “Champions of Inclusive Spaces”, which highlights global examples of outstanding accessible projects. Among those featured were Singapore’s Enabling Village and the Punggol Regional Library, both exemplifying universal design principles and accessible, inclusive spaces. At Punggol Library, participants were able to explore the Zero Project publication in the library’s accessible collection.
A Learning Journey Through Singapore’s Inclusive Spaces
Day 2 of the symposium provided a unique opportunity for delegates to engage in the Inclusive Spaces Learning Journey, which featured guided tours to some of Singapore’s most innovative inclusive spaces. Participants could select from three different routes, each showcasing a range of accessible locations that exemplify universal design:
- Route 1: Sentosa & Punggol Regional Library
- Route 2: Gardens by the Bay & Punggol Regional Library
- Route 3: Science Centre Singapore & Esplanade
These routes were carefully selected to showcase how public spaces can be made more inclusive, offering valuable insights into how universal design can improve access and create better experiences for everyone, regardless of ability. Participants also had the opportunity to experience the accessible design of Singapore's local public transportation system.
Fostering Connections and Collaboration
In addition to #ZeroProjectAPAC 2024, the programme featured a Get-Together co-hosted by UnExcluded and TiE Singapore. This informal gathering allowed participants to connect with stakeholders from the region, setting a collaborative and engaging tone for the event.
Another highlight was the Enabling Lives Festival held at the Enabling Village. The festival celebrated the talents and achievements of people with disabilities through a series of performances, art exhibitions, craft sales, and technology innovation showcases. All the work on display was created by persons with disabilities.
A Catalyst for Future Action
The Zero Project Asia Pacific Symposium 2024 successfully laid the foundation for future collaboration across the region. The momentum generated through the exchange of ideas and insights from around the world will continue to drive the development of more inclusive practices, policies, and technologies.
