Application giving information about accessibility

WAGIS-SIGMAP-Walkome is an online accessibility geographic information system which provides accessibility information on thoroughfare, public buildings, facilities, public services and transportation. With the help of a GPS equipped mobile phone, citizens are able to calculate their itineraries, which are best adapted to their personal needs and abilities.

  • WAGIS-SIGMAP-Walkome was on display in the “Walk 21” conference  that took place in Munich in September 2013

PROBLEMS TARGETED

Through the project the autonomy and participation of people with disabilities is strengthened through offering them information about accessibility and proposing them barrier-free routes. At the same time the awareness for the need of accessibility is increased.

PROJECT

The project provides two different services: one is called WAGIS, which stands for the internet based service information. The other one is called Walkome and was developed for the Android system for itinerary calculation. Through the “routing tool” the best available route is pointed out, considering the accessibility obstacles and dangers. Further on, the accessibility problems can be reported by the users to the responsible persons or institutions. There also exists an online forum, in which opinions and information can be exchanged between people with disabilities and local authorities.

CURRENT SITUATION & OUTLOOK

This project was developed in 2012 and since then constantly upgraded, responding to
the user suggestions. WAGIS-SIGMAP-Walkome has had an impact on several local authorities
in Portugal and abroad, encouraging them to increase the accessibility in their
towns and cities.
