PROBLEMS TARGETED
Arts accessibility services such as audio description and theatrical interpretation was not a familiar concept in the performing arts sector in Hong Kong when it was first introduced. “Playback for ALL” was established to ensure theatregoers with different needs access to the performance.
PROJECT Playback Theatre is created through a unique collaboration between performers and audience. Someone tells a story or moment from his/her life, chooses actors to play the different roles and then watches as the story is immediately recreated. Using audio description (actions on screen are described during natural pauses of the theatre) and theatrical interpretation Playback for ALL performances make this special form of theatre accessible for everyone. CURRENT SITUATION & OUTLOOK The project has received overwhelming response. Playback for ALL has shown to other Playback Theatre practitioners, arts accessibility services and cultural institutions around the globe, how arts accessibility can be integrated into performances. Hopefully similar projects can be adapted in other settings to increase the accessibility of arts and cultural programs.
