Task force “bank4all”

At the task force representatives of blind- and disability organisations, bank institutes and producers of software for ATM´s were working together. The goal was to develop a catalogue of criteria for barrier-free ATM´s and indicating measures to make barrier-free ATM´s.

„The results of “bank4all” will allow money transactions in a much easier and – most important – private way.”

FACTS & FIGURES

  • Members and experts of four Austrian organisations of blind and partially sighted people
  • 318.000 blind and partially sighted people in Austria will benefit

PROBLEMS TARGETED

There are several barriers for blind and partially sighted persons regarding banking services. Especially new self-service devices with touch controls make the use even more difficult for the target group.

PROJECT

Barriers at the self-determined handling of ATM´s are existing, especially because of the development of touch screens. By developing a criteria catalogue for barrier-free ATM´s the project fosters independent and flexible use for blind, partially sighted or elderly persons. It also wants to raise awareness for the fact that accessible design is useful also for people who would not consider themselves part of the target group.

CURRENT SITUATION & OUTLOOK

The essential requirements have been agreed on and will be implemented by all partners step by step. For example, voice guidance of cash dispensers was defined as the first sub-goal and has already been implemented, while its functionality was constantly monitored by blind people. As a second sub-goal large font and high contrast modes will be implemented during the year 2014. Our main goal is of course complete accessibility of all money transactions within the self-service area. Therefore we are working on binding standards within the scope of bank4all. The project team is also serving as a contact point for questions regarding the design of bank lobbies where self-service terminals are located.
