About the practice at a glance
Name of Innovative Practice:Progetto LIA – LIBRI ITALIANI ACCESSIBILI
Organisation:Ediser srl
Country
of origin
Italy
Beneficiaries targeted people with visual impairments
Approach/ model/ solution:give the opportunity of finding any kinds of braille books on an internet platform

FACTS & FIGURES

  • a catalogue of 3,000 fiction and non-fiction titles
  • European Commission e-Inclusion Awards in 2012
  • best international practices from G3ICT

PROBLEMS TARGETED

So far, visually impaired people’s access to books was possible through different channels. The visually impaired person had first to find the book he desired, then to buy it, after that to ask a specialized person for producing an accessible version and finally to wait for the delivery.

PROJECT

Thanks to LIA, visually impaired people will have direct access to affordable versions in the same way and timing as any other reader. By browsing on online bookshops that are participating in the project, everyone could know whether an eBook is accessible or simply to reach the same information in a dedicated website (www.libriitalianiaccessibili.it).

CURRENT SITUATION & OUTLOOK

LIA’s innovative approach is based on the collaboration of all stakeholders involved in the digital publishing industry (publishers, distributors, software vendors and devices, end users), and the integration of accessibility in existing processes and channels. The model created is scalable as it is based on the use of standards and interoperable systems and not on the creation of any dedicated or parallel tools. In the future more partners will be required, in order to make the catalogue of books bigger and available for more people.

Libri Italiani AccessibiliLIA offers a selection of more than 5,200 e-books accessible to blind and visually impaired readers to buy or lend in the main on line stores and libraries in Italy.
